1848 Tri-colour Celebration
The 1848 Tricolour Celebration is a cultural and historical event, which commemorates the flying of the Irish National Flag for the first time by Waterford man Thomas Francis Meagher in his native city at the Wolf Tone Confederate Club at 33 The Mall, Waterford on March 7th 1848. The 2019 (1848 Tricolour Celebration) Events will now take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th June.
The event will now be held annually on the weekend nearest to the 1st July which marks the death of Thomas Francis Meagher.
Each year the aim of the celebration is to promote respect, honour and pride in our National Flag. The Tricolour which was designed in Paris by Waterford man Thomas Francis Meagher has had a significant impact on our country over the years.
Thomas Francis Meagher, patriot in our country; transported to Tasmania; in America, during the Civil War, joined the 69th NY, ‘The Fighting Irish’, and founded the Irish Brigade; died Governor of Montana in unusual circumstances – a patriot in both countries, Ireland and America.
The event is attended by members of the general public as well as Ambassadors, Military, Irish and 69th NY, Veterans, UN, Brass and Marching Bands and Island of Ireland Peace Choir.
The 2019 programme of events will be available shortly.
The programme of events gives Irish people everywhere a platform to celebrate Irish Culture and lasting peace on this island, which Meagher captured beautifully in the colours of ‘An Bhratach Náisinta,’ our national flag. One of the key aims of the celebration is to commemorate Meagher’s vision of peace and equality for Ireland.
“The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the ‘Orange’ and the ‘Green’, and I trust that beneath its folds, the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood” – Thomas Francis Meagher.
