The “John Dwyer Trad Weekend” is named after the great fiddle player from Castletownbere,West Cork. A true living legend of Traditional music John was awarded the coveted “TG4 composer of the year award” in 2010. The festival honours John Dwyer, a native of Cork but resident in nearby New Ross for many years. In 2012, he released his debut CD entitled “The Dursey Sound” and launched it as part of the inaugural “John Dwyer Trad Weekend”.
He has contributed greatly to the music scene in Waterford city for many years now encouraging and teaching younger musicians and playing and performing locally. It was felt appropriate to honour him with the festival as he is still playing and composing music as much as he ever did.
It is a wonderful sight to attend the festival and see John sharing a few tunes with other musicians in a session or concert. The John Dwyer Trad Weekend includes concerts, sessions in pubs, workshops and good craic – not to be missed for lovers of trad.
