South Coast Sailing
South Coast Sailing is based at Waterford Harbour Sailing club on the west pier of the stunning Dunmore East harbour, a beautiful fishing village situated 17km South of Waterford city. Each cruise begins by meeting the skipper and crew at Waterford Harbour Sailing club house. Over a coffee on the deck, registration is followed by a short safety briefing and review of the weather forecast. Included with the cruise booking is a one day membership of Waterford Harbour Sailing club with full use of all the club house facilities such as showers, bar and food and the club premises including the stunning deck with its panoramic views.
After the club house briefing the group board “Riptide”, the vessel for the cruise which is a classic cruising & racing yacht just over 10m long, German built, Dehler DB1 and manufactured in 1981. She is a monohull sailing yacht with a Bermudan sloop fractional rig and finn keel. She weighs 4.5 tonne and draws 1.9m. Her sails are set on a single, 16m high aluminium mast holding a 5m long boom and supported with wire rigging and 3 sets of straight, in line spreaders and spectra runners and checkstayes. When built in 1981, her design was seen as years ahead of its time. Even now, 30 years on, she can be a challenging boat to sail in heavy weather and is still very competitive while racing in her class.
The 3 hour cruise includes sailing around Waterford Estuary, depending on prevailing wind direction and crew expectations there may be opportunity to visit areas such as the Saltee islands, Kilmore Quay, The Hook lighthouse and both the Wexford and Waterford coastlines. The group can spend time on “Riptide” chilling out and taking in the spectacular scenery from a unique perspective, or be involved in the experience of a yacht under sail, working the boat and learning the magic of sail power, there is even an opportunity to take the helm and sail the yacht under the close supervision of the skipper…..it’s your cruise…you decide!
On return to Dunmore East Harbour, the group can continue to soak up the ambience of the day with a relaxing lunch and bottle of wine or an evening pint in the amazing surroundings of the clubhouse. On ending the session, the Skipper encourages feed back from the group on their new found sailing skills and will offer advise on the art of sailing through structured lessons which are provided by South Coast Sailing throughout the season.
