Surf Seekers Trail – Tramore
Freedom Surf School
Freedom Surf School was founded by Billy Butler, a surfer with over 35 years experience and a past member of the National Irish surfing team. Billy has travelled to far off destinations to chase the waves, including Indonesia, Australia, France and the Canary Islands. At Freedom Surf School, safety, customer service, well qualified staff and the promotion of physical activity for life are core values. Using the local outdoor environment, Freedom provides organised outdoor activities that are both challenging and fun and the team at Freedom Surf School endeavour to keep the free spirit of surfing and love of the great outdoors alive.
Freedom has incorporated its love for the Irish language into its outdoor activities and has developed Freedom Scoil Surfála ‘is Ionad Gníomhaíochta Teanga. By using sport and outdoor activities to promote and teach the Irish language, people find that Irish can be fun and easy to learn within this environment. There is a powerful link between doing and learning - therefore experiencing an exciting outdoor activity while learning a language has proven to be a very successful learning combination.
Freedom is also involved in teaching surfing to kids with learning disabilities. As part of the national Surf2heal organisation, Freedom Surf School works with kids with autism teaching them to surf. Part of Freedom’s vision is to bring the sport of surfing to everyone.
Located in the T-Bay Surf Centre in Tramore, County Waterford, Kitesurfing Ireland is the only centre which offers lessons during every season. The first part of the lesson is dedicated to the safety and control of a two-line power kite. Students are then guided step by step through the setup and recovery of land based kites, the effect of wind turbulence and other associated limits of kite flying. The demonstration provides a positive grounding in all aspects of kite sports from stunt to power kites. As a result of lessons with Kitesurfing Ireland, there is an opportunity to enter a much wider world of recreational kite flying.
